Wedding Guest Dress

My husband and I had the absolute pleasure to attended our cousins wedding this weekend. Another opportunity to make a new dress! My last “special dress” was for the Melbourne Cup and I loved the pattern style so much I decided to make it again. (See Melb Cup dress HERE )

The pattern is Vogue 9238. A close-fitting dress with front and back shoulder flounce and cold shoulder detail.

I had in my fabric stash some chiffon that I had brought online a year before. The chiffon arrived unexpectedly in a circle print of butterflies. I was quite stumped to think how I would use this piece. The only idea I had was a poncho but who needs a chiffon poncho? Vogue 9238 has a lovely wide flounce falling all round the top of the shoulders. The colours are rustic orange with grey swirls on off white. My next challenge was to find fabric to contrast with the print. The “pull-on” dress style requires using stretch fabric. I found some heavy weight stretch silver which I used for the body of the dress and “wet look” bronze which i used for the straps and centre front feature. I couldn’t be any happier with the fabric finds that would result in quite a unique dress.

I was particularly pleased with the silver fabric as it had much more form to it and didn’t require lining unlike the earlier Melbourne Cup dress. Easier to make, more comfortable to wear and hopefully hides the additional not-required body bumps!

After I finished making the dress - which I did so much quicker being my second time making, I discovered in my “bling stash” a perfect piece to set off the dress and give it the desired “formal event evening” look. It is a diamanté leaf and all that I needed to do was hand stitch it onto the centre front between the flounces. Da-da!
